Introduction
A web block is a free piece of text, with pictures if you like, that your website can show on a category landing page — "Why rent a camper with us", "Driving licence rules for vans", "Collecting from our Utrecht branch". You write it in the app; the website fetches it and places it on the page. The block screen is headed Web information, with "Content can be shown online." underneath. On the left sit the text fields, on the right a drop zone for pictures, and a second tab, Translation, holds the same text in other languages.
Each block belongs to one category or one vehicle class, and can be tied to one of your locations. You come here when:
- A category page on your website looks bare and you want to add a few paragraphs about it.
- One branch needs its own text on a category page — opening hours, where to park, a local rule.
- The order of the text blocks on a category page is wrong.
- You want to check what text is currently set up for a category, with nothing wrong yet.
Terms used on this screen
| The screen says | It means |
|---|---|
| Asset group category | A category of vehicles on your website, such as "Campers" or "Vans" |
| Asset group | A vehicle class, such as "Compact camper 2-person" |
| Web information, Web content, content item | A web block — the app uses all three names |
| label (internal) | Your own name for the block, so you can recognise it in the list |
Blocks are added from the category or class they belong to; there is no separate list of all blocks. The two routes found in the app:
| Route | Where the block ends up |
|---|---|
| Asset group categories tile → a category → New Web information | On that category's landing page |
| Asset groups tile → a class → Web tab → New content item | Stored on the class — see the Q&A below before relying on it |
Use the category route for text you want customers to see.
How to use
Configuration
There is nothing to switch on. The website needs to be built to show these blocks on its category pages; if your website was set up by RentVisie, it already is.
Before you start: web blocks can only be added, changed or deleted by a user with the Company admin role. The Product design item and the tiles behind it are only shown to that role. If you cannot see them, ask your administrator.
Using the web blocks
From the main menu, open Admin, then Product design. Click the Asset group categories tile. A list headed Asset group category opens.
-
Open the category. Click its row, or the pencil icon at the end of the row. The category opens on its Category tab.
-
Find the block list. Below the name, Order and Slug (recom.) fields is a table headed Web content (optional), with the line "Can be shown at the asset group category landing pages". It shows each existing block's order and label, with a pencil icon (open) and a bin icon (delete) at the end of each row.
-
Click New Web information (above the table). The Web information screen opens. The block is created — and the category saved — at this moment, not when you press Save later.
-
Fill in the fields.
Field Starts as What it does What it accepts location Empty Ties the block to one of your locations. Leave it empty for a general block. A location from the dropdown label (internal) The category's name (empty when added from a class) Your name for the block in the table Up to 200 characters; cannot be empty order 0 Its position among the category's blocks, sent to the website so it can place them in sequence A number above zero; decimals such as 1.5 are allowed. 0 is refused. Body Empty The text itself, with the usual editing toolbar (bold, lists, links, tables) Any length -
Add pictures, if you want them. Drag them onto the box on the right that says Drag and drop files here, or click it to browse. Only pictures are accepted, at most 1 MB each. Each uploaded picture shows an Edit button (to give it a Title and an Order, then Save) and a Delete button.
-
Add translations, if your website runs in more than one language. Open the Translation tab. Each of your other languages has a New Translation button; see Translate your catalogue text for how that works.
-
Press Save at the bottom. The screen closes and the block appears in the table with its order and label.
If something is missing, Save keeps the screen open and puts a red message under the field: label (internal) is empty, order is empty or order should be greater than 0. A translation with an empty field shows Label is empty or Body is empty on the Translation tab — switch to that tab to see it.
To change a block later, click the pencil icon on its row. To remove it, click the bin icon on its row.
Key details
General and location blocks are shown differently. When a customer's visit to the website is tied to one of your locations, the website receives only the blocks for that location. Otherwise it receives every block of the category, general and location-specific together.
| The website asks for | It receives |
|---|---|
| The category, no location | All blocks of the category, including location blocks |
| The category for location Utrecht | Only the blocks set to Utrecht |
Worked example. Your "Campers" category has three blocks:
| order | label | location |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Why a camper | — |
| 2 | Deposit and insurance | — |
| 3 | Collecting in Utrecht | Utrecht |
Block 2's text says the deposit is €500 and the own risk €1,000. A visitor on the general Campers page is sent all three blocks, 1 to 3. A visitor on the Utrecht Campers page is sent only block 3 — not the deposit text. To show the deposit text there too, add a fourth block with the same text and location set to Utrecht. To slip a new block between 1 and 2, give it order 1.5.
Changes reach the website as soon as you save. Nothing is scheduled; the next time the website asks for the category, it gets the saved text. Changing a block does not change any other block, and nothing is copied to the vehicle class pages.
What to do next: for the category's own name, image and address on the website see Write your catalogue text and pictures; for questions and answers under a category, see Set up FAQs for your website.
Q&A
Why does a category block come through on the website with no title and no text? This is a fault in how the app currently hands category blocks to the website, not something you did. When it sends a block, it swaps in the translated label and text, and at present it does not find the translation — so it sends the label and body empty, in every language, even when you have filled in the Translation tab. The pictures and the order still come through. Saving the block again does not help. Report it to RentVisie support, and keep your text in the app: it is stored correctly and will show once the fault is fixed.
Why don't blocks I added on a vehicle class's Web tab show on the website? In this version, the only website feed that sends out web blocks is the category one. Blocks added under Web content on a class (via New content item) are saved, but no website page picks them up. Put class-specific text in the class's Description (long) field on the same Web tab instead — see Write your catalogue text and pictures — or ask RentVisie support whether your website reads class blocks.
Why is there an empty block with order 0 in my table? The block is created the moment you click New Web information or New content item. Pressing Cancel on the block screen closes it but leaves that new, empty block behind. Delete it with the bin icon on its row.
I press Save and nothing happens. Look under label (internal) and order for a red message. If there is none there, open the Translation tab: a translation that was started but left with an empty Label or Body blocks the save. Fill it in, or remove it with the red Cancelar link (bin icon) at the bottom right of that translation.
My picture will not upload. Pictures larger than 1 MB are refused, and only image files are accepted. Make the picture smaller and drag it in again.
A location-specific block has vanished from the general category page. Check its location field. General pages receive location blocks too, but a location page receives only its own location's blocks, so the block may be showing on a different page than you expected. See the table in Key details.
I cannot find the Product design menu or the category. Both are for the Company admin role only. Ask your administrator for that role, or ask them to make the change.
